COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four people died Monday morning from what appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning at a home on the city's northeast side.
All four victims were found in bedrooms at the home on Omega Drive, and a car was running in the garage, according to police.
Michael Sekyere, 46, and his girfriend, Shirley Badu (Daughter of Kofi Badu, former Daily Graphic Editor), 42, were found dead in the home. Sekyere's son, Mike, 21, and daughter, Tracey, 11, were transported to local hospitals, where they died.
Police said a yellow cab was running in the garage and the garage door was shut. Police believe Sekyere may have left the car idling to warm it up.
Firefighters detected high levels of carbon monoxide when they arrived at the home. Firefighters said the carbon monoxide level was eight times higher than the health alert danger level, Roberts reported.
Sekyere's brother, Samuel, found the victims in the home. He said he had not heard from them and went to the home to check on them.
"When I opened the door, I found the motor for the cab was on, so I called his name," Samuel Sekyere said.
He said he then ran to the upstairs master bedroom.
"So I opened the door to the master bedroom and found them," Samuel Sekyere said. "I rushed out of the bedroom, to find my nephew. I went there, I found him on his bed."
He said he and his son kicked the bathroom door open and found the young girl.
Samuel Sekyere said his brother often left his cab running in the morning to warm it up, but that he always made sure the garage door was open.
