The Mission organised the 56th Independence Day Anniversary on 6th March, 2013 at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul. Present at the anniversary celebration were representative of the government, public officials, members of the diplomatic corps, Korea businessmen, Ghanaian students in Korea and representatives of the Ghanaian communities.
The government representative was the Deputy Director-General for Africa and the Middle East, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Chung Tae-in, Africa with who graced the reception with his presence.
The colourful ceremony was also attended by the Gracia Choir of the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) of Korea who sang the national anthems of Ghana and Korea. The audience were entertained by a volunteer group who had spent some time in Ghana.
In her speech, Ghana’s Ambassador to Korea, H.E. Mrs Margaret Clarke-Kwesie, congratulated H.E. Ms. Park Geun-hye for becoming the first female President of the Republic of Korea. She noted that both Ghana and Korea held successful elections last December leading to changes in the President and not changes to the ruling party.
She indicated that President John Dramani Mahama pledged to continue with the policies of the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills policy of ‘A Better Ghana Agenda’. She enumerated some of the programmes that the new administration had initiated.
H.E. Mrs Margaret Clarke-Kwesie touched on the economic growth of Ghana that, the Gross Domestic Product per capita income reached $3,100.00 in 2011 which continues to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the extractive industries, public infrastructure investments, the expansion and modernization of the financial sector, social services, etc. She also recalled the existing bilateral relations between Korea and Ghana which had grown steadily over the years, especially in the area of scientific, technical, cultural cooperation and human resource development that Korea continues to provide to Ghana.
The Deputy Director, Mr. Chang Tae-in, who was the special guest of honour, congratulated the government and people of Ghana for celebrating her 56th Independence anniversary. He stated that Ghana has shown herself to the world as a model of democracy and was being followed by many African countries. He added that, Ghana was also one of the top fastest growing economies in Africa.
He further stated that since Ghana was a forerunner in the race of development, Korea has shared its valuable experience with Ghana. He added that the cooperation between the two countries was also seen in international fora especially for a nuclear free, peaceful and stabilized Korean peninsula.
As part of the Mission’s objective to promote public awareness about Ghana and Korea relations, the Mission wrote articles on Ghana which were published in Korea’s leading English newspapers, The Korea Times, The Korea Herald as well as the Korea Post Magazine.
