Mayor Nikuyah Walker [Left] was honoured for her cooperation with Ghanaians in Charlottesville
The new Mayor of the City of Charlottesville has been honoured by the Ghana Association of Charlottesville in the State of Virginia in the United States of America.
The Mayor, Nikuyah Walker, was honoured during the celebration of the 61st Independence Day Anniversary of Ghana in Charlottesville for her cooperation with the Ghanaian community in Charlottesville.
The Chairman of Ghana Association of Charlottesville, Nana Akyeampong-Ghartey, decorated the Mayor with a kente stole and presented her with a symbolic Ghanaian traditional sword, the Akonfena.
In a short speech, the Chairman of the Association acknowledged that Nikuyah Walker who was voted in January this year as the new Mayor of Charlottesville has already exhibited tenacity of purpose and commitment to serve the people of Charlottesville as well as her cooperation with the Ghanaian community in the city.
The mayor expressed her gratitude to the Ghana Association for the honour and pledged to continue work with the Ghanaian community in the city. She announced that she would lead a delegation from Charlottesville to visit Ghana soon to further deepen the Charlottesville-Winneba Sister City relationship. The City of Charlottesville has a sister city relationship with the City of Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana.
As part of activities marking the independence day anniversary celebration, the crowd was treated to Ghanaian highlife and contemporary songs and a variety of Ghanaian food including banku and okro soup, waakye, omo tuo, fante kenkey, kaakro, kelewele, dough nut (bofrot), ampesi, tilapia, koose, aponkye nkrakra and kyinkyinga (kebab) among others.
