Child of Ghanaian immigrants turns obstacles into opportunities

Driven by a desire to honor her African immigrant parents, recent Enochs High School graduate Sarah Koomson turned obstacles she faced into opportunities for growth.

Koomson’s academic success and resilient attitude led to her inclusion in this year’s edition of Destinations, the Modesto City Schools publication that highlights the year’s graduating seniors.

School site staff select only three students from each school for a feature in the publication. In addition to acknowledging Enochs High School and Modesto City Schools for how they challenged and prepared her for the next level of education, Sarah identifies her parents as her biggest influences.

Their successful immigration from Ghana to America is a source of inspiration.

Sarah has always been a hard-working student, earning honor roll beginning in her elementary school years.

However, the death of her good friend and classmate, Kaylan Carter, at the start of her senior year was heartbreaking. She struggled to move forward, but her resolve to succeed for herself and her parents helped Sarah come to terms with the loss and continue pursuing success in her education.

Sarah was active in Enochs’ Black Student Union and the Future Business Leaders of America Club, and received recognition from the Dr. Parker Committee and the NAACP for her academic success.

She plans to attend North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in the fall, pursuing a career in medicine.
