The brilliant presentation by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia about the voter’s register revealed the dangers that faced us as Ghanaians in our electoral system, especially with 2016 elections in sight. He exposed how Ghana’s voter’s register is packed with tens of thousands of foreigners from neighboring countries. With such an unacceptable exposé, the NPP and civil societies have called for a new voter’s register ahead of 2016 elections. This is to forestall any potential violence that may crop up from the use of the existing discredited register.
One of the groups vigorously advocating for a new voter’s register is the Let My Vote Count (LMVC) Coalition. On September 15, 2015, the group staged a mammoth protest to picket the offices of the Electoral Commission to submit a petition spelling out their position on the need for a new register. This protest, which is within their constitutional right as peace-loving citizens of our nation, was suddenly interrupted by a brutal police force. Many sustained severe injuries from police teargas, water cannons, whips, canes, rubber bullets and other weaponry. We the Concerned Citizens of Ghana in the USA salute these gallant men and women who defied the threats and intimidation of the police and stood up to be counted.
Concerned Ghanaians in the USA will also be holding similar protest against John Mahama and his entourage as they attend the General Assembly at the United Nations in New York. We will be picketing in our numbers on September 30th, 2015 at the premises of the UN to show to the international Community how terribly bloated the Ghanaian voter’s register is with foreigners, and the repercussions that lie ahead of us as a nation if the call for a new voter’s register is not heeded. We are going to make sure that our voices are heard even within the inner bowels of the General Assembly building; donor partners who financially support Ghana’s elections, other dignitaries and presidents need to see the dangers that lurk around for Ghana in election 2016, if a new voter’s register is not used.
Moreover, we are going to show the world how lawless the corrupt John Mahama/NDC administration has rendered Ghana and her citizens. The pictures from brutalities that protesters suffered will be conspicuously displayed to show the international community how Ghana is becoming a police state under the watch of John Mahama. In fact, we will be tendering in a human rights violation complaint to the Human Rights Committee on how the Ghana Police under the command of the John Mahama administration blatantly violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of discerning Ghanaians during the Let My Vote Count protest. Pictures of the police brutalities on LMVC protesters will be made available to the committee.
We are therefore calling on fellow Concerned Ghanaians in the USA to join this protest at the UN General Assembly to bring the state of Ghana’s voters register to the attention of the UN and the International Community. The time to save our dear country from political mayhem and violence is now.
Come and add your voice to the call of fellow Ghanaians back home for a new voter’s register. The time is now. Stand up and be counted!
