Educationist donates books, audio-visuals to Street Academy

Accra, Aug. 15, GNA - A US-based Ghanaian educationist on Tuesday presented audio-visuals and a wide range of books to the Street Academy in Accra.

The items worth over 10 million cedis include books on mathematics, science and English; teaching manuals, manuals for testing skills and activities of pupils as well as software and audio-visuals to support the Academy's library.

Mr Jerry Oku, the educationist with the New York City Board of Education, said being a mathematics and science teacher, he decided to purchase the books and audio-visuals to support children of the Academy have practical learning opportunities to shape their up-bringing. He said, included in the package are classic children's videos and activity books to develop the interest of the children and stop them from loitering.

The Street Academy provides non-formal education to children from the streets and those on the streets as well as assisting them to participate in extra curriculum activities such as sports. Mr Oku advised the Academy to install the software on their computers for an interactive teaching and learning for the benefit of the children.

Ms Jane Amerley Oku, Assemblywoman for Nmenmeete Electoral Area in the Abbosey Okai Sub-Metro who supported the educationist to donate the books, advised the children to make use of the books and the other educational materials.

She expressed concern about the alarming rate at which children were resorting to the street to fend for themselves and called on parents and community leaders to help stem the practice. Mr Ataa Lartey, Director of the Academy, thanked the philanthropists for making such an important donation to the school, saying the gesture would go a long way in encouraging the children to attend classes and other functions.

He appealed to other corporate bodies and individuals to assist the Academy to cater for the upbringing of the children to stop them from going back to the streets. 15 Aug. 05
