The First Lady of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Theresa Kufuor will pay a visit to Canada from October 17-23, 2003. The main purpose of this visit that is being sponsored by the Western Union Financial Services, local Ghanaian businesses and individuals is to meet and interact with Ghanaians in the Greater Toronto Area, as well as to raise funds for her charitable organization, MOTHER & CHILD COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (MCCDF).
Since June 2001, MCCDF has continued to be at the center of the social, cultural, educational and economic development of vulnerable and disadvantaged mothers and their children in Ghana. As the Chief Patron of MCCDF, Mrs. Kufuor is engaged in a process of determining the best ways to support children in their early years to ensure they reach their full potential. The ultimate goal of MCCDF is to ensure that there is a comprehensive, seamless system of early child development programs and services in all the regions of Ghana.
A broad-based Committee for the Visit of the First Lady made up of Ghanaians from diverse ethnic and political backgrounds have been working to plan, design and implement a fundraising drive in aid of MCCDF.
The highlights of the activities marking the visit of the First Lady include a fundraising dinner/dance scheduled for Sunday, October 19, 2003 at the Travelodge Hotel, 2737 Keele Street (at Wilson just north of HWY 401).
The First Lady will also meet a cross section of Ghanaians and sponsors on Saturday, October 18, 2003, as well as visit some Ghanaian churches on Sunday, October 19, 2003. There will also be a LIVE interview at the CHRY 105.5 Radio Station with the First Lady on Saturday, October 18, 2003 between 3:00-6:00 PM.
