GHANBATT 12 fetes 1500 orphans in Kinshasa

Ghanaians as a people are noted worldwide for their hospitality. Wherever we find ourselves as Ghanaians, we aim to leave a mark. The success story of MONUSCO Ghanbatt 12 as Peacekeeping troops in DRC was climaxed with an Outreach Programme that fed 1500 Orphans and their Caregivers in the city of Kinshasa.

Ghanbatt feted 1500 Orphans and their Caregivers who were drawn from 14 Orphanages in Kinshasa. The event was held at the ST Joseph College on Saturday, 3 Dec 2016. Funds for the program was sought from voluntary financial contributions from all ranks, Premium Foods, Standard Bank, Ghana Embassy, Namibian Embassy, the MONUSCO fraternity and other well-wishers.

The day was marked with a variety of activities for the pleasure of the Orphans. They competed in friendly games like lime and spoon, musical chairs, dancing competition and sack race. The children were given small chops and soft drinks after which a main dish of local Ghanaian food, Jollof rice and chicken was served. The surprise guest for the occasion was renowned Ghanaian Actor, Majid Michel, whose appearance added to the joy of the children and all present. He thanked Ghanbatt for a good job done and encouraged the children to learn hard at school and become exemplary citizens.

The children thrilled guests with poem recitals, various local Congolese dances and songs. The various orphanages were presented with bags of rice, oil, sugar, soap, used clothing, buckets, water storage containers, plates and cups, washing basins, school bags and Tshirts, Cowbel products, crates of drinks and medical supplies at the end of the programme. The Caregivers were given sums of money for their efforts in taking care of the Orphans.

Main sponsors of the program were, BRALIMA Foundation, Ghana Embassy, Premium Foods and Standard Bank CD.

The Guest of Honour for the event, Brig Gen Francis Ogbey (Western Brigade Commander), expressed much appreciation to the Ghanaian Battalion for spearheading such a worthy cause. He noted the importance of reaching out to the populace as Peacekeepers.
