Ghana@50: Dallas-Fort Worth

The Council of Ghanaian Associations (COGA), representing approximately 5,000 Ghanaians living in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro Area has released a week-long program of activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) of Ghana’s independence on March 6TH, 1957 after 113 years of British colonial rule.

March 3TH -----Health Fair and Children’s Forum (will run concurrently) at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd, Irving TX 75062: 11:00 am – 4:00 pm)

The Health Forum will offer Free Health Screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, weight management and related health education.

Community health professionals and volunteers will be at your service.


The Children’s Forum will introduce the youth to Ghanaian culture and traditional values as depicted in language, dancing and drumming, and folklore (Ananse stories).


March 4TH ------Gala Soccer Match at the Northlake College, 5001 N. MacArthur Blvd, Irving TX 75038 (2:00 pm – 6:00 pm)


Participating teams include Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra-Leone and the Gambia.


One of the hallmarks of the birth of the African Union (AU), formerly the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was, and continues to be the fostering of friendly relations between African countries via competitive sports, mainly soccer.

March 6TH----- Film and Lecture Series on Ghana at the University of Dallas - Lynch Auditorium - 1845 Northgate Drive, Irving TX 75062 (6:30 pm – 9:30 pm)


Lectures, panel discussions and commentary on Ghana’s contribution to the freedoms and the emancipation of the African Diaspora: Ghana Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow


March 10T-----Dinner Dance Gala at the Las Colinas


Marriot Hotel, 233 West Las Colinas, Irving TX 75039 (8:00 pm – 2:00 am)


A birthday cake will be cut, and a toast proposed for the health and prosperity of Ghana.

A representative from the Embassy of Ghana, Washington DC will be in attendance.


March 11TH -------Thanksgiving Service at the Church


of Pentecost, 858 Candlestick Drive, Grand Prairie TX 75051 (3:00 pm – 5:00 pm)


The week long activities will close with a non-denominational thanksgiving service.
