Ghana Celebrates Golden Jubilee

Madison, Wisconsin — Ghana the first sub-Saharan African nation to attain independence, celebrates its 50th Independence anniversary on March 6, 2007.

The Ghanaian community in Madison, under the auspices of Ghana Association of Madison, Inc (GHAMA) extends a special invitation to individuals, institutions and organizations interested in African history and culture to join them in celebrating Ghana’s Golden Jubilee.

The Ghana Association of Madison, Inc (GHAMA) in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin -Madison African Studies Program will organize a symposium on Friday, March 16, 2007 on the theme “The New GHANA and the AFRICAN DIASPORA” at the On Wisconsin Room, Red Gym, University of Wisconsin-Madison from 7:00 pm. to 9:00 pm.

Ghana, the black star of Africa under the leadership of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah spearheaded the formation of Organization of African Unity (OAU) currently known as the African Union (AU). The Pan-Africanist, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah at the declaration of Ghana’s Independence, said “the independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked to the total liberation of Africa”. Currently, Ghana holds the Presidency of the AU which is a testament to the leadership role and trust reposed in Ghana by the African world. The symposium will revisit Nkrumah’s dream and establish its relevance to the socio-political and economic developments in Africa.
The celebrations continue with an evening of Ghanaian Arts, Craft and Cultural exposé culminating with a Dinner Dance from 6:00 pm till Midnight at the Eagle Heights Community Center, 611 Eagle Heights Dr, University of Wisconsin-Madison on Saturday, March 17, 2007.
