Nayagnia, (U/E), August 19, GNA - Mr Jonathan Simon Aniwene, an opinion leader in the Kassena Nankana District of the Upper East Region has urged northerners in the Diaspora to lend their support to the development of the area.

He made the call at the weekend when the Ghana Association of South Florida (USA), donated a cash of 2,001 Ghana cedis to the Nayagnia Community to help resolve the damage caused by the floods in 2007. Mr Aniwene commended the Association for the donation and stressed the need for northerners in the Diaspora to contribute to reduce poverty in the area.

He said contributing to the development of the three northern regions would help move them forward as was being done by other Ghanaians in the Diaspora for their respective hometowns. Ms Adiza Bucary, Queen of the Association, who presented the money, said members of the Association were touched by news of the flood that destroyed a lot of properties.

She said the money would have been sent to the community earlier but was delayed due to certain problems.

Ms Bucary, also a gender activist, said as part of measures to help fight Female Gentile Mutilation (FGM), a Women's Group called "Ghana Mayen," had been formed in the United States and had drawn strategies to help address the problem with its Ghanaian counterparts. Mr Ben Roger, Chairman of the Development Committee of Nayagnia, thanked the Association and said the money would be put to good use. He noted that one of the major challenges facing the area was education, and that the community had put up a school and appealed to individuals, philanthropists and non-governmental organizations to support it to build a library complex.
