Ghana National Council goes to the polls

The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago is holding elections on Sunday December 5, 2004 to elect executives for 2005-2007. The newly elected executives would be sworn in January 2005.

The current administration which began in September 2003 with Dr. Abdallah Yahaya as President is to end its term on December 31, 2004. Their tenure was short due to a legal technicality in the elections held in December 2002. Elections were held again in January 2003. Dr. Abdallah resigned in July 2004 and the Vice President, Mrs. Elizabeth Bekoe was confirmed as President by the council at the monthly meeting on September 5, 2004.

Although there are 9 executive positions, elections will be held for only three positions and the rest of the executive members are appointed by the President. The executive members who have to be elected are for the positions of President, Treasure and Sergeant-at-arms.
The candidates to be elected were nominated at the General Council meeting on November 1, 2004. The nominees are:

PRESIDENT:
Mrs. Elizabeth Bekoe (current President)
Mr. Reuben Hadzide (current Treasurer)

TREASURER:
Mr. Reuben Hadzide (current Treasurer)
Mr. Kobby Boahene (Okuapeman Association Representative to the Council)

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS:
Mr. Asare-Boafo (current Sergeant-at-arms)
Mr. Ernest Bugyei (Fante Association Representative to the council)

The President has to appoint some members of the Ghanaian Community to serve as electoral observers.
