Ghana UK Based Achievement Awards

A string of celebrities and public figures are set to attend the launch of the second annual Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards Ceremony; a celebration of achievement, within the Ghanaian and African community, in the UK.

The exclusive unveiling of all GUBA 2011 nominees and, also, the recipients of select recognition awards, will take place at The Ghana High Commission, 13 Belgrave Square, Londonon Thursday 15th September 2011.

GUBA 2011 recognises those who have made an outstanding impact, during the period July 2010 to July 2011, in the industries of commerce, the professional sector, sports and entertainment.

Having given an amazing performance at the South Africa World Cup and, also, a great debut season at Sunderland FC, striker Asamoah Gyan' graces the category of Best African Sports Personality alongside triple-jumper Philips Idowu MBE, 5000m long distance Gold medalist Mo Farah and Arsenal Ladies attacker Rachel Yankey.

Creator of Wayne Rooney’s reality TV series 'Street Striker'; Andy Ansah and the founders of corporate cuisine company Jollof Pot are two of the nominees for the Best Entrepreneur category.

Arsenal midfielder and Ghana International Emmanuel Frimpong as well as Nana Afua Antwi winner of TMC (Top Model of Colour) are included in the rising star category.

Urban radio station Choice FM's DJ Abrantee and Teddy Abrokwa winner of GUBA 2010,compete for best Radio Presenter.

The Guardian newspaper’s Afua Hirsch and former '3AM Girl' Eva Simpson are among the nominees for the Best Print Journalist category.

The GUBA patron is Black Star and Leicester City FC defender John Pantsil; proceeds from GUBA 2011 will goes towards Paintsil’s Peace for Kids Project (PPKP), a sport training facility for disadvantaged children, and also Akropong School for the Blind (ASB).

ASB is one of only 2 institutions that looks after the blind in Ghana and houses, feeds and educates some 350 visually impaired children; however, with financial support slowing the school has come under increasing pressure.

“GUBA is a platform to showcase hard working Ghanaians, Africans and also those working hard to provide valuable services to the Ghanaian community in the UK and in Ghana. GUBA 2011 promises to be an enjoyable, exciting occasion with fantastic performances - and the crème de la crème of Ghanaian contenders being honored for their achievements''.

Special guests Mayor Boris Johnson and MPs Dianne Abbott and David Lammy are some of the invitees.
