Two men – one from The Bahamas and another from Ghana – were charged before Magistrate Roger Gomez on Friday with failing to declare the more than $10,000 they allegedly had with them prior to their flight to the United States.
It is alleged that 40-year-old Ghana native, Francis Kantanka, and 34-year-old Bahamian-born Brian Ambrose attempted to take $17,716 cash in U.S. currency into the United States on May 24th.
Court documents showed that Kantanka, a Blue Hill Road resident and Ambros, a Lynden Pindling Estates resident on Monday went to the Lynden Pindling International Airport with the intention to travel to the United States on a pre-clearance flight.
It is further alleged that the two handed over declaration documents to a United States officer stating that they were not carrying currency or monetary instruments valued over $10,000 in U.S. currency or a foreign equivalent, knowing that they were carrying more.
The men were charged on two counts, making a false declaration to an officer of the United States and failing to "declare."
The two were granted $5,000 dollars bail each and are expected to return to court on February 5th.
