The Ghanaian man who is held in Libya by militants of the Islamic State is named as Kofi Frimpong Sekyere, born in Accra. Twitter accounts linked to the group have posted a scan of his passport online, along with a recent picture where he is seen blindfolded.

Sekyere is held alongside a Nigerian and an Egyptian man, according to a report by press agency Reuters.

Large parts of Libya have fallen to Islamist groups, who swore allegiance to the Islamic State militants who are active in Syria and Iraq, and who are also known under the names ISIS or ISIL.

In April, a group of 29 Christians from Ethiopia was filmed and beheaded on a beach in Libya. The propaganda video was later posted online and led to shocked responses from around the world.
