...Over 155 Million Cedis To Hiv-Aids Patients In Ghana.

Chicago, June 7 2005 -- The Ghana Nurses Association of the Midwest, a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization based in Chicago has received over one hundred of fifty-five million cedis of medications largely for the treatment of HIV-AIDS patients in Ghana.

The medications were donated by Dr. Leslie Charles, the head of infectious disease control at Provident hospital in Chicago.

Receiving the medications on behalf of the organization, Mr. Reuben Hadzide, the outgoing secretary of the strong Ghanaian Nurses Organization and President of the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago said the drugs will be directly donated to patients who could not afford the anti-viral medications. He noted that current medications in developed countries has helped majority of HIV-AIDS patients live more quality and longer life than patients in developing countries. Statistics also show that over seventy percent of patients in Africa do not have access to medications for the treatment of HIV-AIDS due to poverty, public policy of various African governments, social perception of those affected the deadly disease and other factors. Mr. Hadzide used the occasion to appeal to various institutions , including former U S president Bill Clinton's global health and Bill Gates foundations to donate through credible organizations like the Ghana Nurses Association which has no or minimal overhead cost and distribute all donations to help those who actually need them.

He thanked Dr. Charles for her concern and prompt response to the request made to her department by the Ghana Nurses Association to assist the poor in need of anti-viral medications in Ghana.
