'You've had success, without attending a drama school. Did you make a conscious decision?

Not at all, I was lucky enough to have been cast at an open audition for an Off West End play. This was basically my first showcase where industry professionals saw me work. I then decided to save money and time by attending part time acting courses which I thoroughly enjoyed and learnt a great deal from.

Do you think drama schools still serve their purpose?

Absolutely, I would never like to discredit a form of training. I however do not believe it is the only way to get into acting. There are plenty part time drama courses that can produce just as skillful actors. However if you have the money and time to spare then do it - I find having a credited Drama school on your CV speaks volumes, but then so does having a good showreel and credits.

How did you get your first agent

I tried to build up my CV with as many decent short film and indie feature film roles. Then I collected all the footage and created my own showreel. Once I looked like the full package I felt a lot more confident writing to agents and was represented by one within a few days of emailing!

Can you remember your first professional audition? What was it like?

Yes - it took a lot of prayer and convincing to get me to attend that open audition. It was for a musical and I had never sung or acted professionally so I initially declined. Then after some persuasion I plucked up the courage and performed and sang my little heart out - Alas I was cast!

Lastly, what piece of advice would you give to other actors wanting to 'get into the room'?

Be yourself! There is always room in the industry for someone like you - do not alter your look or tone of your voice or acting style because that is your unique selling point. For instance I now wear my hair natural for nearly all of my auditions and jobs. - It helps! www.imdb.me/scherrikarbell
