Killing of Ghanaians in the Gambia

Accra, Aug. 4, GNA - Thirteen Ghanaians have been killed in the Gambia by security agents on Saturday July 23,the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in Accra on Thursday. The Ministry said in a statement that The 13 Ghanaians were among an estimated group of about 54 Ghanaians, who traveled to the Gambia from Dakar, Senegal.

The statement said, "the circumstances surrounding the death of the Ghanaians remain unclear at this point in time."


It said while the Ghana Embassy in Dakar is in contact with the office of Ghana Honorary Consul in Banjul over the deaths, President J.A. Kufuor has additionally directed that the Minister of Foreign Affairs lead a government delegation to the Gambia on Saturday August 6, 2005 to lodge an official complaint, to the Gambian Head of State and to also ascertain from the Gambian authorities "circumstances leading to the deaths of our compatriots."

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will notify next of kins of the affected Ghanaians in due course."
