The New Patriotic Party (NPP) North America Branch writes to pay a special homage to Professor Albert Kwadwo Adu Boahen whose death on May 24, 2006 occurred on his birthday. Professor Adu Boahen was a founding member of the NPP in Ghana and remained the pillar behind the party until his passing.

As Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) North America Branch, I recall proudly the day Professor Adu Boahen inaugurated the Danquah/Busia Club at the former Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. On that occasion, and in his subsequent visits to Washington, D.C., he stressed integrity, integrity, integrity in the conduct of national service.

Professor Adu Boahen was the unselfish doyen upon whose counsel all members depended to organize and structure the party into a victorious party it has become today. Indeed Professor Adu Boahen laid the foundation and then set the stage for NPP victory at the polls. His tireless and enthusiastic campaigns contributed tremendously to NPP’s victory in the 2000 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Professor Adu Boahen was one of the staunchest believers in democracy and the supremacy of a constitution to govern the affairs of a nation. He believed strongly that Ghana could achieve its full potential under a democratically elected government. Professor Adu Boahen eschewed coup d’etat which he considered unnecessary, illegal and a betrayal of the people.

Professor Adu Boahen provided a breath of fresh air when we as a nation desperately needed men of valor to challenge our minds, our hearts, and souls to the evil nature of tyranny and oppression.

He was indefatigable against blasphemous propaganda in political campaigns. He stood for truth, integrity and fairness in all walks of life. He was an intellectual giant, a pillar of respectability and a political maestro who became the party’s flag bearer in 1992.

The world community, the people of Ghana and especially the NPP have lost an illustrious intellectual and political genius, a dear friend and an outstanding leader. Professor Adu Boahen, we mourn your death. As we prepare for the national elections in 2008, we will miss you dearly. However, we are comforted by the belief that the standards of decency and hard work which you have bequeathed to us will always serve as guiding principles in our quest for enduring democracy; accountability and good governance.

“What makes a nation’s pillars high? Not gold, but only men, who stand for truth and honour!”.

Professor DA YIE. MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PERFECT ETERNAL PEACE
