Ghanaian students in China have been asked to sell the good name of Ghana in every part of China they found themselves. Speaking at the 23rd Annual congress of NUGS-China under the theme; Strengthening the Bilateral Relations between Ghana and China – The role of NUGS-China, Her Excellency the Ghana Ambassador to China, Mrs Helen Mamle Kofi represented by Mr. Akwasi A. Agyare, Deputy Head of Mission, told the students that, the theme chosen for the congress was very timely, especially after the successful and very fruitful state visit by His Excellency Prof J.E.A Mills in September 2010. The visit he said further strengthened the bilateral relations that existed between Ghana and China and created a focal point of meaningful collaboration between the two countries.

He urged the students to see themselves as effective cultural ambassadors of Ghana in China and in that NUGS-China could partner and complement the Embassy’s efforts of Tourism promotion. He asked the students not to see themselves just as students but primarily as Ghanaian students and their identity and nationality as Ghanaians be evident and pronounced every where they are. He promised the NUGS-China of the Embassy’s support to complement their goal of strengthening the relations between the two countries and also explore avenues and keep the flag of Ghana flying higher in China.

On his part, the outgoing president of NUGS-China, Mr. Samuel Kwadwo Frimpong recount numerous problems faced by the Ghanaian students in China. He requested the embassy to create a special fund to assist students who genuinely need financial help. He also requested the embassy to employ a staff who will be sole responsible for students’ affairs, since there are over one thousand Ghanaian students in China and day in and out more troop in with a lot of challenges with their academic and social life. He also encouraged the students to take advantage of every opportunity that comes on their way, since China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and there are a lot of opportunities as well. He asked his colleagues to be law abiding and avoid involving themselves in things that can cause their academic career and future.

The new President of NUGS-China Mr. Victor Ganyoame thanked the delegates for the confidence imposed in him and promised to continue with the good work done by the previous administration. He also asked the Embassy to help deal with the issue of fraudulent agents who deceive students in the name of getting them jobs but the victims end up stranded on their arrival in China since Chinese laws do not allow students to work it becomes very difficult for them to survive.

The chairman of the Ghanaian community in China Mr. James Asare Tano who acted as the chairman of the occasion also promised the support of the Ghanaian community to the students. He also advised them to take their studies seriously since that is the main reason why they are here and also to acquire the necessary knowledge that will help develop Ghana when they go back.
