Nana Dichemsohemaa's Double Celebration in Style

Saturday, October 20th 2012 will be remembered as a historical day for Nana Yaa Pokuaa Ababio, Dichemsohemaa. Nana Ababio celebrated her 63rd birthday as well as her 30th anniversary of her enstoolment as Dichemsohemaa.

The Chairperson for the double celebration was Nana Otimpie Aben II, Otumfuo's Sasaamohene Panyin. Among the distinguished royals in attendance were; Nana Afrakoma Juaben, Omanhemaa of Agogo traditional area, Nana Yaa Asantewaa II, Ejisuhemaa, Nana Kofi Boateng, Washington Metro Asantefuohene, Nana Tieku Acheampong, New York Asantefuohene who was accompanied by his other sub-chiefs. The event which occurred at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church had a packed audience which included community leaders and guests from across the USA, Ghana, Canada and Europe.

Nana Pokuaa Ababio used the double celebration to offer her sincere thanks to her maker for reaching such a milestone. She also conferred a title; Nana Sompahene I(A leader who serves his community)to Mr. Charles Nimmo Ntiamoah-Mensah aka Mr. CNN/3G Mogul, Chief Executive Officer/Founder & Publisher; 3G Media which publishes 3G Magazine and www.3gmediaonline.com. She said Mr. CNN is well known in the Ghanaian community and has used his position as a media mogul to promote Ghana as well as its community in America. Mr. CNN offered his sincere gratitude to Ohemaa Yaa Pokuaa Ababio for the honor bestowed upon him.

Music was provided by Gucci Soundz and MCs were; Nana Sarpong, Honorable George Bonsu and Ms Sarah Owusu Sarpong.

* Brief Biography of Nana Dichemsohemaa;*

Nana Yaa Pokuaa Ababio of the Aduana Clan of Ashanti, Ghana was born on October 5th, 1949 to Nana Afua Adowa of Diechemso and the late Nana Kwadwo Owusu of Old Tafo. She was the eighth of ten children.

Known in private circles as Mary Agyeman, she started her formal education at the Old Tafo Primary School and proceeded to Tech. Middle school. She was a keen basketball player and was very popular among her peers.

On completion, Nana took some secretarial courses and was employed by the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. Whilst there, Nana performed her duties well and made a significant mark in that department.

Nana did not stay unnoticed for too long before a young man from Akyem Asuom in the Eastern Region of Ghana discovered her and proposed marriage. Akwasi Sarpong married Nana when she was twenty five years old. Nana's marriage to Akwasi was blessed with three beautiful girls namely, Linda, Phyllis and Martha. Her mannerism and etiquette was evident in the upbringing of her children.

In 1976, Nana entered into her own business where she opened up a shop at Suame in Kumasi selling spare parts. Her business flourished and she had customers from all walks of life.

In 1982 at the prime age of 38, Nana was enstooled as the Diechemsohemaa among many contestants upon the death of her grand mother Nana Yaa Pokuaa 1st. After 3 days of celebration, Nana went to the Manhyia Palace to greet the Asantehemaa, Nana Afua Kobi Ampem and the AsanteheneOtumfuo Opoku Ware II.

Later in life, Nana decided to visit her children in United Kingdom and then came to the United States to visit Linda and to take care of her grand children.
