Newly crowned welterweight champion of the world Joshua ‘Hitter’ Clottey will be honored as the Special Guest at the annual summer picnic organized by the National Council of Ghanaian Associations (NCOGA) of New York The 2008 version of the annual outdoor family extravaganza will be held on Saturday August 9, 2008 at the Sherwood State Park in Connecticut.
A tentative program drawn by the organizers indicate that the champion will be received at the park with traditional drumming and dancing by various Ghanaian cultural troupes. Arrangements have been made for the Wulomo of the Ga-Adangme Kpee in New York Nii Akotwe Glover to offer traditional prayers and blessings. Thereafter, the champion and his entourage will be presented to the crowd in a procession of drummers and dancers. This will be followed by formal introductions and a brief speech by the champ and his trainer Mr. Asante.
The summer picnic is the single most patronized event in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut tri-state area on the Ghanaian calendar. Thousands of Ghanaians of all ages and status routinely show up to spend fun time with family and friends. Apart from feasting on good food and drinks, this is one event that you are most likely to run into a long-lost school mate or acquaintance, observe youthful beauty and wildness in fashion and dabble in the latest gossips and going-ons in the community.
This year’s affair has been dubbed the Mother of All Picnics and with the presence of Joshua Hitter Clottey the newly minted Ghanaian world champion and hero, you can anticipate that the fun will be twice as good as in past years. Souvenirs bearing the champ’s image will be available for purchase.
