President J.A. Kufuor has called on Ghanaians living abroad to always remember their roots and continue to contribute their quota towards the growth and development of their country. He expressed appreciation for the remittances from Ghanaians living abroad which he said had contributed greatly towards efforts being made to put the economy on a sound footing and urged them to continue to provide that support.
President Kufuor was speaking to the Ghanaian community here at the start of a three-day working visit to Jamaica.
?As professionals in this country, I expect you to work with the best practices; but the most important thing for you now is to remember home?. And, he quipped ?let your money go home if you are not going?.
President Kufuor said that government was counting on those living outside not so much on political party lines but as citizens committed to the development of their country.
He briefed them on the new educational policy, the National Health Insurance Scheme, the infrastructural development going on in the country and development of ICT, saying that the Government was doing a lot to make the country the gateway to the West African sub-region.
He said Ghana had become a haven of peace in the region where the rule of law, respect for human rights and true democratic principles are being practiced.
He said that the country?s per capita income was gradually rising and it was the aim of government to hit a 1,000 dollar mark in the next 10 years and urged citizens abroad to assist in achieving that.
On efforts to tackle corruption, the President said the Government had passed laws such as Public Procurement Law, The Internal Audit Law and the Financial Administration Law whilst the budgets for institutions such as the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and CHRAJ had also been increased.
