Shortlist announced for African Business Awards 2013

Wed, 18 Sep 2013 Source: IC Events

Leading pan-African magazine, African Business, has announced the

shortlist for its annual African Business Awards. The winners of the

competition will be announced at the Awards ceremony that will take

place on the 20th September at the Mandarin Oriental New York. The event

will coincide with the African Leadership Forum and the UN Global

Compact Leaders Summit, where global CEOs meet to discuss best practice

and sustainable business responsibility.

This is the sixth edition of the Awards, which were launched to

highlight the changing business landscape in Africa and to showcase some

of the men and women driving this change. The Awards have aimed to

promote good governance and best business practices, as well encourage

and instil an innovative culture throughout the continent.

Stiff competition for the African Business of Year has resulted in a

total of seven finalists from well recognised brands Dangote, Ethiopian

Airlines, South African start up ThoughtWorks, Diageo through its local

breweries, DHL, and Siemens: Cluster Africa. The innovation category was

similarly competitive with East Africa representing almost half of the

finalists with Mawingu and Safaricom (Kenya) and Uganda Industrial

Research Institute.

One of the key drivers of Africa's growth lies in developing and growing

African and global businesses and brands in Africa. This is why this

year, in association with Brand Africa, the African Business Awards will

be announcing two new awards, the African Brand of the Year and the Best

Global brand in Africa.

Commenting on this year's entries, Omar Ben Yedder, Publisher of African

Business magazine, said "We are delighted once again to recognise more

success stories. Since we launched the award, Africa has effectively

gone mainstream, and rightly so. Saying that, many companies and

entrepreneurs are succeeding despite the many obstacles and challenges

they face daily. And, as we can see from the shortlist, it is great to

see that the best talent is now being attracted to Africa to work and

create world leaders in their field.”

The winners will be selected by an independent panel of judges, selected

for their expertise and their impact on the African Business community.

This year there are 7 different categories for the Awards that centre on

the sectors crucial to the development of the African continent. The aim

of the Awards is to recognise business leaders and companies that have

excelled in Africa over the last year. The winners would have made an

outstanding contribution to the development of the continent, the

economic aspirations of its citizens and the transformation of Africa's

image in international markets, while displaying high standards of good

corporate citizenship and social and environmental responsibility.

Organised by IC Publications, publishers of the African Business

magazine, the African Business Awards****brings together prominent

business leaders, entrepreneurs, heads of state and other high-ranking

government officials from across the world to celebrate the achievements

and successes of those who have played a pivotal role in driving

Africa's economic development forward.

This year's African Business Awards will precede the inaugural African

Leadership Forum that will also take place in New York on the 21st

September.

The Awards are supported by GTBank and Mota-Engil Africa (Platinum

Sponsors); Bank of Industry and Microsoft 4Afrika (Gold Sponsors); DHL

and Fasken Martineau (Silver Sponsor); African Development Bank

(Official Sponsor); Paramount Group (Sponsor); and A PINs for Peace

(Lunch Sponsor).
