Accra, March 16, GNA - Sixty-four Ghanaian deportees, including two women, were on Wednesday deported from Spain to Accra aboard a chartered flight after attempting to illegally enter Spain by sea.

The deportees who looked unkempt said they had tried to enter Spain by a ship, which they had earlier boarded in C=F4te d'Ivoire. They said upon arrival in Spanish waters they were met by members of the Red Cross Society who handed them over to the Spanish Immigration Service.

Mr. Anthony Fernandseth, one of the three Spanish Immigration Officials who accompanied the deportees, said the Spanish authorities detained the ship, which had other African nationals on board, when they realized that it flew no flag.

Upon further investigations the Spaniards realized that the ship had no legal documents that authorized it to be in Spanish waters. He said the crew escaped as the ship approached the Spanish shores, but two of the crew were arrested.

Mr Fernandseth said Spanish officials had not yet determined the country from which the ship arrived and noted that the deportees' word could not be trusted since they had not been telling the truth. He added that they had also not found out those in charge of the ship.

Meanwhile, the deportees, who come from all the regions in the country have each received a stipend from the Spanish Government to cater for their transportation to their various destinations.
