The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC) and its affiliates (tribes) are excited to present its flagship, the 36th Annual GhanaFest, in Washington Park on July 27th from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM. Themed “Embracing Our Culture,” the festival is the most prominent display of authentic Ghanaian culture in the Midwest.
Guests will enjoy access to the all-day festival for a nominal front gate fee. Various attractions and activities will be available, such as food vendors where guests can taste authentic dishes from various Ghanaian restaurants throughout Chicagoland.
Many vendors will also sell shea butter, African clothing, art, and jewelry from Ghana. There is no shortage of cultural displays as the Chiefs and Queen Mothers of the various tribes will participate in the parade of chiefs and tribal cultural performances. Live music will be provided around the clock featuring world-traveled musicians that will delight patrons.
The youth will be delighted by the abundance of activities at the Youth Village tents, which include dancing competitions, Ghana trivia, face painting, a bouncy house, and much more!
Traditionally held on the last Saturday in July, it has grown from a small gathering to an event attracting over 5,800 guests. The success of GhanaFest in Chicago has inspired many other cities with large Ghanaian populations to adopt the concept and host their own annual GhanaFest celebrations.
Under the leadership of Ghana National Council President Kassim Abubakari, now in his second year, efforts have been made to elevate GhanaFest to new heights. President Abubakari aims to foster relationships with businesses and organizations outside the Ghanaian community to amplify how the diaspora embraces Ghanaian culture.
This year, the GNC has partnered with the CIRCLE Foundation, which will bring a team of student workers to assist with the day-long festival. This partnership was formed following the Foundation's decision to take over 18 youths to Ghana.
Ghanaian-American Miss Windy City, Kokui Annani-Akollor, will make a special appearance to engage the next generation. Additionally, by intentionally using Vipsocio, an integrated ticket service provider, guests can learn more about events beyond the Ghanaian community, including other African cultures.
Building these relationships is essential for the Ghanaian community, the next generations, the diaspora, and other communities.
As Ghana's national and most popular sport, soccer takes center stage in the continuation of GhanaFest. The following day, at 4:00 PM in Jackson Park, soccer fans and enthusiasts can enjoy a free match featuring the Chicago Ghana team. They will compete to retain their title as the 2023 African champions in Chicagoland.
