The Passing Away of George Kwasi Annan Monney

Uncle George Monney, a prominent Ghanaian who has lived and helped several Ghanaians in Germany died on the 13th February 2005 of heart complications, he was 78 years old. He will be buried in Cape Coast on 30th April, 2005.

He was father to all Africans and cared for his fellow citizens especially the new-comers. His house was opened to every African. He helped hundreds of Africans in and outside Hannover. Among the Ghanaian and African community, he enjoyed great respect for his helpfulness. He has been a mentor to several German trained Ghanaian professionals including several Ghanaian trained medical professionals such as the current head of Korlebu Medical School and Hospital Dr. Frimpong Boateng..

Late Mr. George Monney was born on the 12th October 1926 in Sekondi, Ghana, then Gold Coast. A week after, he was brought to Cape Coast, Ghana his home town.

At the age of 5 years, he was admitted to the Cape Coast Government Boys? School and in a matter of 9 years instead of 10 he successfully completed the Primary School Education by passing the Middle School Leaving Certificate Examination held in October 1943. In 1944 he entered Secondary School and in 1948 he successfully passed the Cambridge School Certificate Examination.

In 1949 he was employed by the Bank of West Africa. In 1950 he entered the Cambridge University and read for Economics and by 1953 he was already a High Executive Officer in Chief Accountant?s Office in Ghana, then Gold Coast. In 1956 he won a scholarship from the Cocoa Marketing Board to study Marine Engineering. He matriculated in 1956 at the Technical University, Stuttgart because the University of Hannover which has the Faculty of Marine Engineering did not admit 1st semester Students.

In 1959 having passed part of the Diplom preliminary examination, he transferred to Hannover.

In 1963 he found himself in a direct conflict with the Government of Ghana, whereby, not only his scholarship was cancelled but also he was prevented from getting any means of assistance from his parents. To keep body and soul together he was compelled to accept a job at the VW Hannover where he worked until his retirement.

In January 1964, he got married to Miss Qwante. Late Mr Monney got divorced, three years later he met his wife Florence and they have been happily married 27 years. The marriages of Mr Monney were blessed with four children: Constance Monney (Germany), George Monney (Ghana-Airways), another George Monney (Germany), and David Otu Nyarko (USA).

He and his partners opened an engineering company called BOMOLA Ltd. Subsidiary firm of Geomechanik in Ghana, which drilled hundreds of wells in the rural areas of Ghana.

He was a founding member of the Ghana Students Union in Hannover and later became the President of the Union for more than 20 years.
