Ghanaian troops currently serving with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone have donated an amount of $4,650 as their contribution to the "Dollar a Month for Ghana Fund", an initiative of the Ghana High Commission in Freetown.
The Fund which was launched last year by Ghana's Minister of Defence, Hon. Kwame Addo Kufuor aims at mobilizing the financial support of Ghanaians working in Sierra Leone to support humanitarian causes in both Ghana and Sierra Leone..
Rear Admiral J.K Gbenah, the Chief of Naval Staff, who made the presentation to Ghana's High Commissioner, H.E. Kabral Blay-Amihere, on behalf of Ghanbatt 7 at a reception held in his honour in Freetown commended the Freetown Mission for its initiative.
Lt. Colonel Braimah Musah, the Commanding Officer of Ghanbatt 7 said that by supporting the Fund, Ghanbatt 7 was showing the commitment of the Ghanaian soldier to the developmemt of Ghana in every sphere.
Ambassador Kabral expressed his gratitude to Ghanbatt 7 for its support for the Fund and assured them that their contibution will be used judiciously in the national interest. He appealed to other Ghanaians living in Sierra Leone to emulate the fine example of our soldiers when the Fund is relaunched on August 16, 2003 at a special dance for the Ghanaian community.
The Dollar a Month for Ghana Fund which was launched on February 12, 2002 in its first year realised an amount of $21,000. The Fund donated a number of items including dual desks and eye glasses for school children to schools in Ghana early this year.
In Sierra Leone, the Milton Margai School for the Blind, the Handicapped Action Movement, an NGO for handicapped people and the Lungi Community were supported by the Fund.
