Speaking to a packed house of Ghanaians at the Broadwater Farms Community Center in London on March 17, 2007, President John A. Kufuor said:
“We have chosen a government committed to democracy and the rule of law. This means that contributions from all are needed and welcome. It is therefore natural that the NPP government whose motto is “Development in Freedom” will express continuous appreciation for the enormous contributions of Ghana’s Diaspora in talent and money that is estimated to be about $4 billion this year. We pray that the knowledge, hard-work ethic and the value of time that you have learned abroad will affect us back home directly and indirectly. And for a government that models itself after the leading democratic Parties in the West, we have signed ROPAA into law and are bringing the ballot box to you to vote in Ghana’s elections from where you live.”
The crowd, clad in rich colours of Ghanaian attire and waving flags to celebrate Ghana’s 50th, exploded in thunderous applause with some crying “at long last.”
