Yamfo to have a Community Computer Lab.

Citizens of Yamfo based in the US are to establish a community computer laboratory for the youth of the town. This decision was arrived at this year’s annual general meeting of the association held in Framingham- Boston in the state of Massachusetts. The project which has been adopted by the members is expected to be accomplished in 2007. This move was mooted by Ebenezer Adjei, a youth of the town, who appealed to the executives of the North American based association through an SOS email that he sent from Ghana couple of weeks ago. Ebenezer Adjei asked that the members as a matter of urgency should factor into their subsequent developmental agenda for Yamfo the setting up of a community computer lab.

For the early completion of the project, two members namely Nsiah Willie, based in Seattle, Washington State, and Charles Osei Tutu a resident of Boston- MA, have been tasked to coordinate effectively to see to the take off of the project. Initial successes registered in this direction include contacting of some companies in Seattle (Washington State) who are ready to assist the association to acquire the computers that are needed for the setting up of the laboratory. It is expected that when the computer lab is established it will promote computer literacy among the youth, who will be abreast with modern trend of development in this information technology age.

Members also took time to take stock of the accomplishments of the previous year that ran from May 2005 to May 2006.Notably among the positive strides of the Association in the past year included; the establishment of a website for the association (www.yamfocitizens.com) ; donation of ten hospital beds to the Yamfo Health Center, Sending a letter to the Asantehene to help resolve the protracted chieftaincy dispute between the paramount chief and some of the sub-chiefs in the township; and within the same period having the association registered in the State of Maryland as a Non-Profit Organization with US Tax ID. Present at the meeting was Opanin Opoku Mensah, who specifically was invited by the association to brief members of the strides made in resolving the chieftaincy dispute that has hindered the smooth development of Yamfo. He hinted that efforts are underway to have the case withdrawn from the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs. Opanin Opoku-Mensah, also called for unity among the members, and asked that the association should form sub- committee within its membership which should specifically deal with immigration issues and also serve as an advisory body to the entire members on how to be law abiding residents in the US. He also corrected the erroneous impression created that it is the Government of Ghana that is going to elevate Yamfo Health Center to a hospital status. He hinted that rather it is Newmont Gold Company, a mining company operating in the Ahafo area of the Brong Ahafo region that is assisting in this direction.

The Homecoming 2007 program of the association is in its final stage as a five- member-committee has been put in place headed by Paul K. Gyau, to do feasibility studies and then report to the Executive Board for further planning and its implementation. Other members of the committee include Ben AKyereko, Yaw Bonnah, Florence Ankoma and Nana Ohemeng “Obolobo”. Homecoming 2007 is a program designed for members to visit Yamfo in 2007, where the association members will take advantage to meet and interact with the chiefs and people of the township to get first hand information of their needs.

The next annual general meeting of Yamfo Citizens Association is scheduled to take place in Washington DC in May 2007.
