As part of activities marking the Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly in memory of the millions of executed Jews by the Nazis during World War II, the Union of the Jewish Municipalities in Serbia in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Serbia, commemorated the day which fell on Saturday, 27th January, 2007, with an impressive but solemn programme of music and choir performance at the Dom Vojske in the centre of Belgrade.
2. In attendance were a host of dignitaries including Heads of Diplomatic Missions, the Jewish Community in Belgrade, Representative of the Serbia Prime Minister, as well as Prince Aleksander and wife Princess Katarina of Belgrade. Also present was the Ambassador of the State of Israel, Her Excellency Mrs. Jaffa Ben-Ari.
3. Ghana was fully represented by His Excellency Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe at the ceremony.
4. There was, however, a marked presence of the various religious bodies in Belgrade, namely the Orthodox Church, the Protestants and Christian organizations as evidenced by the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Belgrade, His Excellency, Archbishop Eugenio Sharbaro.
5. On the whole, the ceremony was a success, with the lighting of six (6) candles in memory of the six million Jews who were killed during the period.
