The CPP Flagbearer Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom won more converts to his message of change and his vision of a disciplined country with a passion for excellence in a series of activities in the New York/New Jersey area. He did this in a humble, patient manner which demonstrated a high level of respect for the people who gathered to listen and interact with him. Dr. Nduom came through without pomp, without any hint of arrogance and as someone truly seeking the assistance of Ghanaians to become the Number Servant of the people.
On Sunday, June 1st Dr. Nduom met with a group of Ghanaian lawyers who have decided to form the Ghanaian Lawyers Association in the United States of America in Newark New Jersey. This was a mini version of the Town Hall Meeting Dr. Nduom has made an important feature of his campaign in Ghana. This afforded an opportunity to the lawyers to listen to his vision, his message and his view of chances that he will become the next President of the Republic of Ghana. The lawyers wanted to know his views on the drug problem, the CPP’s strength to contest the elections and how to strengthen the judiciary system in Ghana among the several questions they posed to the Flagbearer. It was a very active, interesting and informative session particularly as Dr. Nduom made enough time available to answer everybody’s questions and listen to their comments and concerns.
Dr. Nduom was very clear that he will aggressively implement the National Identification System which he was instrumental in getting started. This he said will provide the opportunity to create data bases to help check crime and corruption. Driver’s license and passport duplication, lack of a credible credit data base to fight bank fraud, crime information system to help the police and prosecutors will be targets of this system. He will train and re-equip the police throughout the country with technology to make their work easier and reduce their burden of prosecutors and the judiciary by ensuring that they have more credible information to back their cases. The CPP Flagbearer explained his plan to separate the Ministry of Justice and the Office of Attorney General to make the prosecutor’s office more independent from politicians and enable it to fight corruption and work better with the police and judiciary. He was concerned about the drug menace and will strengthen the Narcotics Board and will give it the necessary resources to enable the Board to fight the problem more effectively.
Dr. Nduom also discussed his legislative agenda – to strengthen Parliament, give it offices, technology and research support to become an effective source of checks and balances to the Presidency. He will sponsor amendment to the Constitution to stop the practice of Members of Parliament also serving as Ministers of State so that the MPs can concentrate on being law makers.
Dr. Nduom gave a passionate presentation on the need to amend the Constitution to make it possible for the people to elect their District/Municipal/Metropolitan Chief Executives to bring greater accountability to the people and enhance local development. To him, if the people are wise enough to cast a vote to elect a President and Members of Parliament, they are certainly wise enough to cast a vote to elect their Assembly Members and Chief Executives.
He explained how the Party will win the 2008 elections and assured them that the CPP is electing peacefully, resourceful, popular and credible parliamentary candidates to make the campaign exciting and strong. Dr. Nduom repeated his point that he makes at every stop that “the CPP will have at least 100 solid, popular, resourceful and competitive parliamentary candidates across the country capable of winning parliamentary seats for the CPP. We are organizing a united, strengthened CPP to be the alternative and win the 2008 elections.”
Finally, he asked for their support and encouraged them to examine the messages coming from his competitors. He said he was the Candidate for Change that will benefit all Ghanaians while the others are asking for Continuity and promising to reward their party people if they win.
Dr. Nduom congratulated them for forming an association and encouraged the Ghanaian lawyers to organize themselves effectively to form an effective pressure group to promote the Ghanaian interest and to offer support to the development efforts back home.
