The Mid-Volta Association of Ontario, Canada celebrated its 10th Anniversary on Easter Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Toronto. The Association used the occasion to raise funds in support of an on-going water project in Ghana.
The chairman for the occasion was Nana Atuahene Karikari I, Nkosuohene of Pease. In a welcome address, he appealed to all to support the Association’s efforts in raising funds for the project. Nana Atuahene Karikari I was supported by Togbe Avalie III, Chief of Gbi-Bla near Hohoe and Ms. Bernice Adjei a Registered Nurse in Toronto.
The Consul-General of Ghana Mr. Kwadjo Mawutor was the Guest Speaker. He brought greetings and well-wishes from His Excellency Dr. Richard Turkson, Ghana High Commissioner to Canada.
Mr. Mawutor praised the efforts of the Mid-Volta Association for not enjoying the benefits of Canada alone but extending helping hands to needy people back home. He urged members of the community to stay united and be law abiding citizens in their newly adopted home. He reminded them that the services at the Consulate and the High Commission in Ottawa are open to all Ghanaians. He appealed to all to do whatever they can, no matter how small, to assist the government back home in making Ghana a better place for all. He said, extending help to our people in Ghana should not be limited to family remittances and material donations alone but they should explore the possibility of bringing investments into the country.
In a short address, the President of the Association Mr. Simon Adzraku welcomed all to the event. He thanked them for putting their busy Easter schedules on hold in order to join them for the celebration.
The President recounted some of the past achievements of the Association where material donations were sent to some educational and health institutions in Ghana. He thanked all those helped in the past and said “we couldn’t have done it without your generous donations.” He informed them that the Association was embarking on another project of supporting an on-going water project in Ghana and appealed to all to give their full support. He assured them that a full disclosure of every cent they donated that evening would be provided at next year’s celebrations.
The President also thanked members of the Association for their dedication and hard work which has sustained the Association over the years.
Twenty-five members of the Association were decorated by the President with the Order of the Volta medals for their distinguished services.
The Youth were not left out of the appreciation ceremony. Seven teenagers were presented with certificates for their attendance and voluntary service. These young ones were always seen by the side of their parents helping with their little hands anytime there was a call to duty by the Association. Those too young to receive certificates were given special anniversary gift parcels.
The certificates and gift parcels were presented by the Vice-President of the Association Mr. Ben Akplu.
