Rather than being on the street and dealing with the wrong crowd, he chose to sing and becoming a music superstar.
Here is a profile of Damian Otchere below;
Damian Otchere resides in East Orange NJ and was born in Brooklyn NY. At the age of 5 he moved to New Jersey and attended Jackson Academy Elementary School in NJ. Damian was so full of life and spunk that sometimes he found himself seated outside the office because he loved to have the attention always on him. He was what one would call the class clown. Damian loved music and began to play the drums in the church at a very young age. His vocal skills were limited but he made up with his wonderful personality and his ability to dance. He was the class motivator with a very big heart and would always cheer everyone on and giving them moral support.
One day his music teacher, Ms. Pasterczyk, told him he needed to channel all his energy to being on stage and not doing it in the classroom. She placed him in the chorus and put him in the front row because of his personality. However was asked to lip sync only. He was not a very good singer and by fifth grade he was given a small solo. Damian then knew this was what he had wanted to be. He loves entertaining and being in front of an audience. He is natural and entertaining is his middle name. He approached the music teacher and asked if she could teach him how to be a good singer. She said it would be hard work and complete dedication.
Damian insisted that he could do it and practiced daily. There were days he asked his teacher for songs he wanted to sing. He learned many different genres, like classical, country, inspirational, R&B, musicals, pop and religious. He looked up to Luther Vandross and Michael Buble.
Then one day he was told by one of his classmates that he could not sing. The boy told him to give it up he will never be good. Damian did not let this get to him or discouraged. Instead, it encouraged him, made him stronger and even more determined to be a show stopper. After several months of hard work, he began to enter vocal competitions and eventually was winning overall vocal titles. He traveled all around the country to compete and just finished his first year at Cicely Tyson of Performing Arts High School. This year was very productive with getting the principal role in his high school musical; "Dream Girls" as Jimmy. He was a hit and won an award for his performance.
Damien got the opportunity to audition for the Radio Disney show called; NBT. (Next Big Thing) through the help of Ms Pasterczyk and Montana Music Management. He was finally chosen to be one of the contestants in the season 5 NBT show.
