... to spread word on autism campaign
Specialists in child behaviour, speech and communication, and social finance will be amongst speakers presenting at next month’s autism seminar organised by London charity the GUBA Foundation.
The event will give parents an opportunity to talk directly to experts about their experiences and attempts to dispel stigma often associated with the condition within the African community.
Guided by speech and language therapist Selve Krishnan, who is also CEO of Communication Links Limited, parents will learn how to improve their child’s communication development. Julia Avnon will provide advice on tackling challenging behavior in autistic children, while Emilia Ouattara will talk on accessing finance.
The seminar takes place at Walworth Methodist Church, 54 Camberwell Road, SE5 0EN from 1pm on Saturday 12 October. Tickets for the event are £5. This is the third awareness event staged by GUBA Foundation since the organisation’s inaugural event on 27 April at the Bernie Grants Arts Centre in Tottenham north London.
“After the success of our Tottenham event, parents and carers asked us to stage a similar event in the south of London,” the charity’s CEO and founder Dentaa said. “Our aim is to spread the awareness campaign far wide across the UK and Ghana, and our autumn event in Camberwell aims to bring us closer to achieving our ultimate goal.”
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects communication, social interaction and how a person makes sense of the world around him or her. The condition affects one in every 100 people in the UK, which means that over 100,000 people living with the condition come from black or ethnic minority (BME) communities. But despite this figure, people from the BME community are typically diagnosed later than their white counterparts, and face more of an uphill struggle trying to seek support.
