The Ghanaian community in Bergen, Norway marked the 46th independence anniversary with two activities. On March 7th, a seminar on health challenges was organised. Presentations were made by three health specialists. This included one by Raphael Adobor MD, an Orthopaedic specialist at the University Hospital in Bergen who discussed the cash and carry system. Other topics discussed were the pressures posed by HIV/AIDS, the departures of health professionals and requirements for a successful health insurance scheme.
The next day, an entertainment gala night took place at Bergen?s International Cultural Centre. It drew an audience of Ghanaians, other Africans in Bergen and Norwegians. The programme began with the singing of the national anthem and libation pouring. This was followed by a cultural display featuring Ghanaian dances like Kpalongo and Adowa. Other African dances were also performed to the admiration of the audience. This was seen by many as a demonstration of African unity. Alongside the programme, there was sale of Ghanaian batik clothing and food.
The night ended with a free for all dance to Ghanaian hip life music. It was a delight to see many people in rich flowing Kente and other Ghanaian garments dance to Apuskeleke and Aben Wo Ha.
