Help expand the shea butter trade in Ghana - Deputy High Commissioner woos The Body Shop

Ghana’s Deputy High Commissioner to the UK Madam Rita Tani Iddi has urged The Body Shop, a UK cosmetic, skin care and perfume company to scale up their sourcing in northern Ghana in order to help expand the production of Shea butter in Ghana.

Madam Tani Iddi made the appeal in her closing remarks at an International Women’s Day lunch to celebrate the women who have been supplying The Body Shop their shea butter since 1994.

The Tungteiya Women’s Association is made up of over 475 women in 11 villages around Tamale, northern Ghana, and for the past 25 years have supplied The Body Shop with 390 tons of shea butter a year which is used in 450 of its products.

The Deputy High Commissioner also encourage The Body Shop consider buying from other shea butter production groups in the Northern parts of Ghana.

The UK marketing manager for The Body Shop revealed that the company will be setting up an outfit in Ghana soon to take care of its Business in West Africa owing to Ghana’s image as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Other personalities present at the Lunch include Clara Amfo, a broadcaster with BBC Radio 1 and officials of The Body Shop.
