Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen has revealed there is a ‘300-year generational relationship’ between President Akufo-Addo, the Attorney General Gloria Akuffo, the Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, and Kwame Akuffo a former National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Board member.

Both, Sophia and Gloria, are said to be first cousins of President Akufo-Addo, from Akropong-Akuapim in the Eastern Region. Their mother is from Shai-Osudoku.

Mr Obiri Boahen speaking on Okay FM monitored by MyNewsGH.com explained that Akufo-Addo hails from Akyem Abuakwa which is “Ofori Panin fie” while his paternal cousins the Akuffos hail from “Ofori Kuma fie” which is Akropong. He said this is a 300-year-old relationship that has nothing to do with politics.

In his view, there is nothing wrong with the appointment of the President's family because they are very qualified. According to Obiri Boahen, a quick search of the Ghana Law Reports show the Akuffo's distinguished themselves well and it is not out of place for them to be appointed into public office.

The opposition NDC has consistently accused the Akufo-Addo government of being the most nepotistic government in the history of Ghana, a charge government has denied.

They say in 2016, then Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, made a solemn promise to the people of Ghana that he “will not operate a family and friends’ government.”
