The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini has accused the Akufo-Addo government of being intolerant to dissenting views.
According to him, the suspension of the Eastern Regional Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Fred Dzeny, substantiates his claims.
Mr Dzeny was suspended for asking President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to prosecute his own appointees as part of efforts to fight corruption.
He said in a recent interview with journalists that: “The ruling government should be ready first and foremost to prosecute their own when the slightest incident of corruption is raised against the ruling government then they can also get the guts to prosecute the opposition.”
“When you look at the corruption cases in Ghana, it is not just politicians who are corrupt, the public servants, civil servants, they are all corrupt. When you look at it, it is the Chief Directors who prepare contract documents and other things, so, if we are blaming the politicians, it is not right, it is the public servants generally.”
Commenting on the matter, Mr Fuseini told Class 91.3FM on Tuesday, 6 November 2018, that: “The government is increasingly showing how intolerant it is when it comes to the expression of opinion and views of individuals”.
He said the view of the Eastern Regional Director of EOCO is “rational and it is in accord with right-thinking persons”.
The lawmaker pointed out that the almost two-year-old Akufo-Addo government has been mired in a litany of corruption allegations, so, it is “only proper and fitting that the government demonstrates its commitment in fighting corruption by first dealing with those people in this government who are perceived to be corrupt”.
He said the Eastern Region EOCO boss’ concern is shared by “a great number of Ghanaians”, and, so, that “should not be the basis of a suspension”.
