The best possible means of rebuilding the Black Stars and restoring its glory is by casting the net wide when selecting players, coach Kwesi Appiah has said.
Critics have often vilified the Black Stars coach for his knack of handing call-ups to unknown players stating that it disrupts the team’s cohesion and stability but Kwesi Appiah says his decision inures to the long-term benefit of the team.
Speaking in an interview with Metro TV, the former Al-Khartoum boss held that the rebuilding process would be unsuccessful if he limits his selection to a few players.
Kwesi Appiah cited the Ghana-Congo game where he had to fall on new players due to the absence of five regular players to support his decision.
“I have been given an assignment to rebuild the team and that’s what I'm working towards. We don’t have to depend on few players when we can pick from a large pool of players. For instance, before we went to Congo we had about five players injured, if we had depended on few players Ghana would have suffered. So its important that as a country we build a formidable side whereby if one or two players get injured we have people who can equally replace them”, he said.
Kwesi Appiah who believes that Ghanaians must a have a say in the selection of players, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the players and also called on the FA to create a platform where Ghanaians will have access to the players.
“So far those I have invited have been impressive and I’m happy with the team but I don’t always believe that I should be the only person judging them. All Ghanaians must have access to the players and so far Ghanaians have seen that most of the players have proven beyond doubt that they should be wearing the national team jersey”, Kwesi Appiah added.
