Residents of Sogakope in the Volta Region are unhappy with the response given by the police after the arrest of two officers over some missing rifles.

The rifles were said to have been used in the murder of the Assemblyman for Sogakope South Electoral Area, Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, on Sunday, March 1.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Volta Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, the pick up of two officers was not in connection with the murder.

“Yes, two police officers were picked up but not involved in the assemblyman murder case,” Corporal Prince Dogbatse told 3news.com Sunday.

Before then, four civilians had been arrested to aid investigations.

A statement issued by the residents said while the police were quick to arraign the civilians before a judge, they exonerated their own “in a dramatic turn”.

“There was no proper investigation leading to the statement issued by the Volta Regional Police PR,” the statement issued by Spokesperson Maxwell Lukutor said.

“We implore the IGP and the several security Ministers to ensure that there are no underhand dealings in this case. Their actions should earn the police service especially within the Volta Region and Sogakope, in particular, some trust for once.”

They want the police PRO to be “very circumspect in his utterances not to incur the displeasure of the citizenry who are reading reasoned meaning into their actions and inactions”.

Among other demands including asking for the resignation of the District Chief Executive, the residents want all the arrested including the police officers to be immediately “interdicted and prosecuted for their actions and inactions”.

“Once again we wish to state that, our eagle eyes are still wide open even as we mourn our colleague, but the police should dare not push anything down our throats. We shall continue to fight until all the perpetrators are brought to book.”
