Dr. Baah is Trade Union Congress General Secretary
The Accra Metro District Council of Labour of the Trade Union Congress (TUC Ghana), held its ordinary general meeting at the TUC Conference Hall in Accra, at which event it expressed concern over government’s delay in constituting various governing Boards, Commissions and Councils of state institutions.
“The Council observed with grave concern that eight months into office of the new administration, significant number of the various governing Boards, Commissions and Councils of state institutions have still not been constituted, a development which is militating against the smooth operations of these public sector or state-owned institutions”.
The Council holds the view that governance cannot be static and therefore the nonexistence of these Boards, Commissions and Councils is not only affecting the operations of many of the state institutions, but negatively impacting the welfare of staff.
It is the believe of the Council that many of the institutions are not able to make critical and very important decisions, which has repercussions for effective and efficient performance of the institutions involved.
Chairman of the Accra Metro District Council of Labour, Tetteh Patrick Binyemi, told the B&FT that: “when it comes to issues of welfare of members, strategic planning, procurement and approval limits, amongst others, such decisions cannot be taken without or in the absence of a board.’
And all these, he said, is to the detriment of the collective agreement and welfare of its members.
The Accra Metro District Council of Labour therefore called on the government, under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo, to constitute the Boards, Commissions and Councils immediately without further delay.
