Managing editor of Ghana Business News, Emmanuel K. Dogbevi has stated that journalists should doubt every information they get from sources until it can be verified.
“… First thing is to doubt whoever is giving the information to me, the second thing is to doubt, and the third is to still doubt until I can verify,” Mr. Dogbevi gave these as verification tips whilst speaking at the closing ceremony of the national week celebration of the Cyber Security Awareness Month 2019.
According to Mr. Dogbevi, it is important for journalists to substantiate the source of their information, as it can influence its credibility.
“I think that the integrity of any information that goes out there depends also on whoever gives it out,” he said.
He also added that trust and integrity can be questioned within the country, especially in governance, so all journalists should operate at their highest form of professionalism.
“To a large extent, our government from this part of the world functions as an extension of the unit party. Where we have the winner takes all system. Government gives more orders functioning as an upgraded form of the political party that won election. So there’s a question of trust and integrity,” he said.
Meanwhile, Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has assured that the Electoral Commission will be void of hackers as her outfit has put mechanisms in place to prevent infiltrators from having access to the country’s electoral data system as it goes to the polls next year.
According to her, the move was to prevent instances of cybercrime that occurred during the last general elections.
