President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday cut the sod for the commencement of work on the Ningo-Prampram Coastal Protection Project.
The project, to be undertaken by Messrs Bridge Global Consolidated Limited at a contract sum of GH¢394 million, is meant to protect a coastal stretch of five kilometres from tidal waves, beach erosion and flooding.
It is expected to be completed in four years.
At a durbar of Chiefs and people of Ningo-Prampram at Ningo in the Greater Accra Region, President Akufo-Addo noted that the area was one of the most important tourist destinations in Ghana.
Nevertheless, he said, the area could not derive the vast benefits of the tourism sector, if the erosion of its pristine shoreline and lands were not checked.
President Akufo-Addo said the project would involve the reclamation of land, and the establishment of a mini-harbour to bring value to the project.
He was confident that the project, when completed, would boost the coastal tourism potential of the area, increase fishing activities, improve Sanitation and health and create jobs for the people.
He assured the Chiefs and people that government would do all it could to fix some of the challenges of the area.
The President earlier on inspected work on the ongoing construction of the 97 kliometre railway project from Tema to Mpakadan river port in Akosombo that is expected to be completed in 2020.
He also visited the workshop set-up for the retrofitting and refurbishment of train coaches at Tema.
The President later inspected ongoing rehabilitation works on the 7.5-kilometer Teshie Link Road in the Ledzokuku Constituency.
The dual-carraige road, which is 40 percent completed, is expected to finished in June, 2020.
