2024 Election: EC resumes printing of presidential ballot papers

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced plans to resume the printing of presidential ballot papers, a process that had been temporarily suspended following the passing of Akua Donkor, the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).

During an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the E.C. informed political parties that "it will resume printing of Presidential Ballot Papers, which was suspended following the death of the Presidential Candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor."

Following her death, the GFP nominated Philip Appiah Kubi as their new candidate. However, after reviewing his nomination papers, the E.C. determined that he did not meet the requirements and disqualified him.

During the meeting, the E.C. also disclosed that the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) had been disqualified because he did not meet the requirements.

"The Commission received Mr. Philip Appiah Kubi's nomination on November 5, 2024. However, upon review, the Commission found that he did not satisfy the requirements and has written to the GFP regarding his disqualification," it stated.

The E.C. noted that despite the disqualification of Appiah Kubi from the race, ballot positions for candidates in the 2024 election would remain unchanged.

Additionally, it disclosed plans to review Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 127 following the 2024 elections to address scenarios where a presidential candidate passes away.

"The Commission, in consultation with stakeholders, will have to review C.I. 127 to make provisions for situations involving the death of a presidential candidate," it announced.
