President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, December 2, 2024, commissioned the Phase II expansion of the Tema Motorway Roundabout, an infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion at one of Ghana's busiest intersections.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo described road infrastructure as “the backbone of the nation’s progress.”
He underscored the motorway’s role as a vital economic artery that has served Ghana for nearly six decades, linking the industrial city of Tema to other regions and the broader West African sub-region.
“These initiatives are part of a deliberate policy to decentralize economic opportunities and foster equitable development across the country,” the President noted.
“Our commitment extends beyond roads, we are investing significantly in other critical sectors of the economy including railways, healthcare, and education. Laying the foundation for economically resilient and inclusive Ghana.”
He added that these investments are laying the foundation for a resilient and inclusive economy while addressing disparities in urban infrastructure.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the upgraded Tema Motorway and other ongoing infrastructure projects are designed to tackle these challenges, facilitate regional trade, and strengthen Ghana’s role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The revamped roundabout, located at the juncture connecting Accra to the industrial hub of Tema, is expected to streamline vehicular movement at the previously congested five-legged intersection.
This development is part of a broader effort to upgrade the 19.5-kilometer Accra-Tema Motorway into a modern 10-lane highway.
Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, commended Japan for its financial and technical support in realizing the project.
He also assured the public of ongoing efforts to improve road networks linked to the interchange, including the Tema-Aflao Road.
The Phase II project, which began in July 2022, involved the construction of a third-tier flyover to further ease traffic flow at the intersection.
This follows Phase I, completed in June 2020, which saw the roundabout converted into a two-tier interchange. Both phases were funded by a $91 million grant from the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
