Disqualification affected my momentum - Dr. Mahama

The Presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr. Edward Mahama, has revealed that the Electoral Commission’s disqualification of his candidature affected the party's momemntum towards the December polls.

“It (disqualification) definitely has had an effect,” said Dr. Mahama on Monday during an interview with Citi FM.

“I have to admit I have been disadvantaged because just before the case came up, I was making plans to raise funds as a candidate. And so, when the case came up you can’t ask people to give you money to be a candidate when you’ve been disqualified. So, on the point of view of even raising funds to support my party, I’ve been disadvantaged,” he added.

The Electoral Commission chairperson Charlotte Osei on October 10, 2016 announced the disqualification of the PNC’s presidential nominee and 12 others over various degrees of mistakes on their nominations form — explaining that was unable to accept Dr. Mahama's nominations because many subscribers did not properly sign the forms and that thumbprints, signatures or marks were omitted all together.

Following his disqualification, Dr. Mahama dragged the commission to court, praying the court to quashe his disqualification and allow him to contest.

The High court is expected to rule on the case Thursday, Nov. 10.

Speaking ahead of the Thursday ruling, Dr. Mahama pledged to accept “whatever God decides.” He however, observed that it does not mean he will not challenge the ruling of the High court, if it does not favour him.

“Whatever God decides I will accept it. But it does not mean I shouldn't appeal the EC's decision,” he emphasized.
