The Presidential candidate for the People’s National Convention (PNC) for the elections in November, Edward Mahama, has stated that he will make fixing the country’s power crisis his top priority if he is elected president.
According to Dr. Mahama, fixing the long-standing energy crisis would serve as a catalyst for the other sectors of the economy to recover from their respective slumps.
“I have promised to solve the power crisis. The energy sector will be the priority of my government. I will prioritise the energy sector because that has a cascading effect for the other sectors,” he said at Tuesday’s Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) evening encounter.
Dr. Edward Mahama stated that several unfulfilled promises over the years by successive governments to revamp the energy sector should convince Ghanaians that a change in government is necessary.
“I’ll tackle the energy sector because that will help create jobs. Ghanaians are fed up with the empty promises. Let’s vote for the PNC for a new beginning,” he said.
Oil money shouldn’t go to Black Stars
The PNC flagbearer criticised the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) for its continued sponsorship of the country’s senior national football team, the Black Stars.
According to him, the GNPC’s decision to constantly fund the Black Stars’ exploits wasn’t prudent use of the country’s oil revenue.
“When GNPC gives money for Black Stars, I really don’t think it is a wise use of it because without that money, we would have another way of funding it. So yes, I think I will redirect that money. So it is a matter of redirecting that chunk of money that is supposed to be used,” he said.
