Independent presidential candidate Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah has challenged the flagbearers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) to show commitment to peaceful elections by putting in place mechanisms or structures to forestall re-occurrence of violent clashes.
“It is high time we that are seeking the highest office of this country became more proactive in ensuring the continuous growth of our democracy not by mere words but by deeds. I think if we cannot control our respective followers by urging them to put Ghana first in whatever they do, then we are a disappointment to the very people we seek to lead”, noted Amoafo-Yeboah.
In a press statement condemning the recent clashes up North, Amoafo-Yeboah stated that flagbearers must be seen to be in charge of their followers before they could be entrusted with the destiny of the whole country. “Coming events, they say, cast their shadows and so looking at the violence witnessed during the limited registration exercise and the recent clashes up North, the onus now lies on us to go the extra mile to sustain the peace we are enjoying”, he explained.
Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah observed that, though flagbearers might not be able to stop all these unfortunate acts, their practical attempts can send signals to their numerous supporters that such criminal acts cannot be tolerated. He said finger pointing and the blame game will not solve the problem.
“If we are really seeking the betterment of our dear motherland, then we need not focus just on the campaigns and the large crowds, but also begin to devise our own internal systems to check some of these disturbing occurrences. Aside from the messages on our various platforms, I think each and every presidential aspirant should begin to preach tolerance and make the youths aware that this is not a do or die affair”, stated Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah.
