Week of Legacies: Akufo-Addo wraps up tenure with major project commissionings

With barely 17 days until the next general elections, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is wrapping up his tenure with a number of project inaugurations.

This week marks a significant period of some of these commissionings, as the president underscores the legacy of his administration through transformative infrastructure and educational advancements.

For instance, Ghana’s education sector is projected to receive a substantial boost with the commissioning of over 80 projects across the country’s 16 regions.

These initiatives aim to enhance access to quality education and provide state-of-the-art facilities tailored to the needs of Ghanaian students.

Among the notable projects are the Kpasenkpe Model STEM Senior High School (SHS) in the West Mamprusi District, the Accra STEM Academy in La-Nkwantanang-Madina, and the Awaso Model STEM SHS in Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai.

Others include the Bosomtwe Model STEM Junior High School (JHS) in the Ashanti Region, featuring a four-story, 11-unit classroom block, and the Wesley Girls Demonstration School in Kumasi Metro, which will now have a six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities. Basic education projects include a 12-unit classroom block at Salem D/A Basic School in Atwima Mponua and two-unit kindergarten blocks at Fremasi DA Primary in Assin South.

Additionally, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) facilities such as the Anyinam TVET-Applied Technical and Fashion School and the Akomadan TVET-Applied Technical School are set to redefine vocational training in Ghana.

Earlier this week, on November 19, 2024, the president inaugurated the Flower Pot Interchange.

Reflecting on his administration’s journey since 2017, he stressed the transformative role of infrastructure in national development, stating, "When we assumed office in 2017, we knew that true national development rests upon the foundation of well-planned and well-executed infrastructure. Roads are pathways to opportunity, prosperity, and a better quality of life for all."

Akufo-Addo further emphasised that the interchange is a clear example of his government’s commitment to progress.

“Today, with this interchange, we reaffirm that our commitment to progress is more than rhetoric — it is action built in stone and steel," he remarked.

He reiterated his vision of a Ghana that works for everyone, ensuring that all citizens feel the impact of government initiatives.

“This interchange is not just a piece of infrastructure; it is a testament to our commitment to building a new Ghana, one that works for every citizen. It is a privilege for me and a proud moment for the nation,” he said.

The Flower Pot Interchange, located at Spintex, features a flyover and an underpass is expected to improve north-south traffic flow, easing congestion in one of Accra’s busiest areas.

Construction of the interchange began in 2017 and is expected to greatly enhance connectivity between the northern and southern regions of the Accra-Tema Motorway.

It is expected to reduce travel time for commuters travelling between East Legon, Madina, and other northern areas to destinations such as Teshie, Spintex, La, and 37.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, President Nana Akufo-Addo is to commission the Bank of Ghana’s newly-constructed headquarters, named "The Bank Square," in Accra.

Despite a backlash from the public over the need for the new edifice, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has defended the necessity of the project, reaffirming its operational importance and the potential financial setbacks had the construction been halted.

This week of inaugurations underscores the president’s efforts to leave a lasting legacy, highlighting his administration’s commitment to infrastructure and education as cornerstones of national development.
